Memorial Day Weekend Up North: Where to Stay, What to Check Out
Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer—and there’s no better place in the Midwest to celebrate than Northern Michigan. Nestled along Lake Michigan, these charming town’s offer a blend of beaches, wineries, outdoor adventure, and small-town vibes into one unforgettable long weekend.
If weather allows!
Let’s be honest, we’ve lucked out with some pretty amazing Memorial Day weekends in the past. The weather is usually a perfect combination that you see people wearing sweaters on their shoulders and think “I’d never wear a sweater like that” and then you land in Northern Michigan where you often want to wear your sweater like that. But hey, remember to pack layers, just in case.
Spend the morning watching the sailboat’s with a cup of coffee.
Here are a few places I’d check out on a partly sunny day. Wink*
Brunch at Fiddleheads in Lake Leelanau:
This is such a charming spot to start a mid morning venture. You will be pleasantly surprised by this quaint eatery and how delightful their menu is. Take a peek at the Raclette Omelette, one of our fav’s! Did I mention this is the perfect place if you are staying at our Cedar House. And a picturesque fifteen minute drive to brunch!
Mid-day pint at Hop Lot Brewing Co. :
Up North has lots of places to explore and the first place I think of after a bit of adventure is surely Hop Lot. Just outside of downtown Suttons Bay, this genuine local feel is a spot in the woods that you never want to leave. Take a break with a pint of 90 MPH Backwards, its a treat! An ideal must visit if you are staying with us at Stillwater.
Dinner at Farm Club:
Your evening doesn’t get better than dinner at Farm Club. This space truly fulfills every expectation of making your Memorial Day weekend unforgettable. They offer a farm to table experience with the most relaxed spaces. The giant yard also is home to many of their produce or herbs which you will see as you explore their lawn space. Our Hemlock House is only about five minutes away!
Celebrating the holiday
The long Memorial Day weekend gives us a little extra time to soak it all in. How lucky are we to spend time in a place you never run out of things to explore? Did we mention the snow is gone? Hurray! But caution, we do have a few spots with some serious road construction. Luckily none of it is in downtown TC or Leelanau. Phew!
I know this holiday is a kickoff to a summer but we will always remember we are celebrating to honor the men and women who served and died in service. I’m wishing everyone the best holiday and summer season enjoying great times up north making memories with the people you love!
